Welcome to Surly Acres

Surly Acres is a woodlot located in Warkworth, Ontario, committed to preserving the natural ecosystem of the area. Predominantly forested, Surly Acres encompasses a mix of wetlands, rolling hills and forested areas populated with native species ground cover, tolerant hardwood and evergreen tickets.

Owned and operated since 1994 by descendants of members the We'kopekwitk Band of the Mi'kmaq First Nations people, today Surly Acres provides a welcome, safe environment for those looking to escape the trials of modern life.

Habitat

At Surly Acres Forest management goes hand in hand with the establishment and upkeep of wildlife habitat. We preserve and promote the growth of indigenous plant-life and have a long term goal of encouraging and preserving the growth of areas of Oak Savanah where possible.

Currently we are host to a variety of indigenous and invasive plant species and work hard to foster positive development of a balanced and sustainable ecosystem. Some species present include:

-Sumac

-Virginia Creeper

-St John's wort

-Wild Strawberry

-White Clover

-Joe Pye Weed

-Milkweed

-Mullein

Yes, we also "host" some Poison Ivy, so be careful. 😉

Animal friends

Some live here, some visit, but all are welcome. The range of terrain and diversity of undergrowth provides food and cover for many animals who are free to use them as they may.

We recognize and respect the unique and important role of conservation and sustenance hunting in Canada, but do not allow it on our land out of respect for both the animals and our clientele. Animals that have been spotted on our lands represent the still extant bounty which once existed in this area:

-Bats, Red Fox,Red Squirrel, Eastern Chipmunk, Gray Squirrel, Whitetail Deer, Coyote, Black Bear to name a few. Most controversial: Ask about the moose.🙄

With a resident "Bird Nerd" on staff, Surly Acres is committed to preserving the habitat and recording the presence of many of our feathered friends. Aside from the more traditional migratory birds, we are blessed to have hosted Wild Turkey, Red-tailed Hawk, Great Horned Owl, Barred Owl and Barn Owl to name a few as well as Pileated Woodpecker.

We love our feathered buddies and actively promote conservation. (See our Support Page).
